1. Accuracy of Shruthi (Pitch) - 15 points
2. Knowledge of Swara (Notes) - 15 Points
3. Accuracy in Laya (Tempo) - 15 points
4. Accuracy with Taalam - 15 Points
5. Demonstration of good Sahityam - 15 Points
6. Presentation - 10 points
7. Gamaka -  5 points
8. Feeling or Bhava - 10 points
Everyone will get a gift and certificate for their participation.
For percussion instrument
1. Clarity in percussive sounds - 15
2. Laya Balance - 15
3. Talam - Accuracy - 15
4. Feeling in playing - 15
5. Complexity of the rhythm phrases - 15
6. Sitting Position - 10
7. Presentation - 15

Raghusutha Memorial Music Prizes

Raghusutha was a great literary personality from India. He has written more than 700 books on various genres, such as Novels (social and Historical), dramas, poetry, geography, and many more. He translated 95 books from Telugu to Kannada. The story of Nannaiah won the best translation from Central Academy in 1988. His work on spiritual work brought him laurels, such as “Bharatiya Punya Naari Parampare,” which is a grand dedication to the contribution of women in Indian culture and tradition.

These are three scholarships given to the best music student, who wins overall points from judges and music lovers. Each Scholar Ship is $150.

Important Dates

Application deadline: May 16th, 2023
All entries must be complete, submitted, and paid by this date. No changes to entry details will be permitted after the deadline.

Competition date: May 20th, 2022
All music competitions will be held on this date at Gandhi Center, St. Louis in the Ground Floor. We will publish a schedule of categories AFTER the deadline has passed.

Prize distribution: May 20th, 2022
Prizes will be distributed at 8:30 PM, and the results will be posted online after the ceremony.

Time Limits

Time limits are dependent on the skill level of the music student.

Aarambha level - 5 Minutes - 6 – 9 Years – Geethams, or Bhajans, or Short classical songs

Madhyam level – 5 minutes  - Kruthi, Varnam, Khayal, Thumri, Tarana, and other similar songs   -  Age group – Junior - 10- 15 / Senior 16 – 19 / Adults 20 and Above

Praveena Level - This includes the expansion of Ragas with experience in each discipline. Includes Alapana, Neraval, Swara Vistara. Hindustani music includes Bandish which comprises of Sthayi, Antara, Sanchari, and Abhog. The time limit is 7 minutes.  Age group – Junior - 10- 15 / Senior 16 – 19 / Adults 20 and Above

The time limit for Percussion is 5 minutes

 Rules

  • All applicants must announce their music’s name, ragam, talam, and first few words of the Sahitya. Percussionists must mention the tala name.
  • A strict time limit will be imposed. A buzzer will signal the conclusion of the allotted time. The judges may also request the contestant to stop before the allotted time.
  • The decision of the judges is final and binding.

Prizes

For Aarambha and Madhyama levels  - $100 - First prize / $75 – Second Prize / $50 – Third Prize

For Praveena - $125 - First prize / $100 – Second Prize / $75 – Third Prize

Please note: If there are fewer than 7 people in the competition only a memento and certificate will be issued.

Registering Every participant is registered once they pay the fee online.
